Electric Trucks vs. Diesel Trucks: Performance and Cost Comparison

Electric trucks vs. diesel trucks is the new debate as the road to sustainability in trucking becomes a priority. But this is leading militants to better use it. Here’s a detailed comparison of these two technologies.

Operating Costs Comparison (Fuel vs. Electricity)

Running a cost comparison between a fuel and electric truck is one of the biggest considerations. The cost of diesel fuel varies, making it more difficult for businesses to forecast costs. Electricity, on the other hand, is more stable and, in many cases, cheaper. Electric trucks are about 50% cheaper than diesel trucks to fuel per mile, a report from the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) shows. Key developments in the electric truck industry, such as government incentives and expanding charging infrastructure, are further improving cost-effectiveness, making electrification a more viable option for fleet operators. Facilitating government incentives and also enhancing widespread charging infrastructure contribute to cost-effectiveness.

Performance Parameters (Torque, Payload Capacity, Mileage)

When it comes to comparing the efficiency of electric trucks with diesel options, performance is a big consideration. While diesel trucks have a proven track record for long hauls, electric trucks have far superior torque and acceleration. The electric semi features instantaneous torque and makes the run from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds when loaded to capacity—faster than many diesel competitors. However, payload capacity continues to be evaluated. This performance edge is largely due to key components and technologies driving electric trucks, such as advanced battery systems and lightweight materials designed to improve range and payload capacity.

Climate, Environmental, and Carbon Footprint Reduction

Electric trucks are a much more efficient way of eliminating emissions than diesel, making sustainability in trucking a growing concern. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), diesel trucks are responsible for almost 25% of total greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. In contrast, electric trucks emit zero tailpipe emissions and take a step further in reducing carbon emissions when powered by renewable energy sources. However, the shift to electrification comes with both challenges and opportunities in electric truck adoption, including the need for widespread charging infrastructure and advancements in battery technology to support long-haul operations.

TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) over the Vehicle Lifecycle

Although electric trucks do have a higher initial cost, they will ultimately have lower maintenance and fuel costs, lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) over time. According to research from the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), electric trucks achieve TCO parity with diesel in five to seven years, due to savings accrued through fuel, maintenance, and tax credits. As the cost of batteries shrinks, the break-even period is likely to narrow. The size of the electric truck industry was valued at US$ 2.73 billion in 2022 and is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 18.1%, from 2023 to 2030. Electric trucks, bolstered by ongoing technological innovation and supportive policy, will play a dominant role in the future of commercial transportation.
