Women with History of High Blood Pressure Might Experience Menopausal Symptoms during Pregnancy, Study Suggests

According to a new study by the researchers of Mayo Clinic suggests that women during pregnancy with a history of high blood pressure disorders have high chances to undergo inconvenient menopausal symptoms that include hot flashes and night sweats. Moreover, researchers also reported that women with high blood pressure during pregnancy experiencing night sweats and hot flashes are at high risk to develop heart disease.

In this study, researchers evaluated the health records of 2,684 women of age group 40 to 65 who visited women's health clinics at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and Arizona for specialty menopause or sexual health consultation during May 2015 and September 2019. These participants who are part of this research study were instructed to complete a questionnaire, where they self-reported about their menopause symptoms and its impact on quality of life. These participants were also instructed to complete the questionnaires about experience of high blood pressure disorders during pregnancy, which include preeclampsia or gestational hypertension.

Later, researchers observed major connotation between women with high blood pressure disorders during pregnancy, who stated more difficult menopausal symptoms. Moreover, women with history of high blood and undergoing hormone therapy also stated about menopausal symptoms, in comparison to women with no history of high blood pressure disorder during pregnancy.

Dr. Faubion stated, "We know medical providers have historically done a lousy job identifying and following women with histories of high blood pressure disorders during pregnancy, despite knowing that they have a higher heart disease risk. This study is another reminder that these women are different. It is important that they not only receive education with regard to what they may experience during menopause, but also that they undergo routine screenings and counseling on how they can reduce their risk for heart disease.”
