As per an article, the combination of names and numbers will soon no longer be used.
According to an article published by The Verge, the method by which identities are managed on the Discord platform is undergoing "big changes" as the company works to deploy them. As a direct consequence of this, you will be prompted to select a new username. The company has, till now this point, appended a four-digit tag to each individual does identify in order to differentiate individuals who have the same login. This was done in order to comply with regulatory requirements. On the other hand, the new method will provide each user their very own unique username, much like Twitter and Instagram, in addition to other online platforms.
"The whole point of these changes is to make it easy for everyone and all the new users to bond and hang out with friends," co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy wrote in a blog post about the planned updates to the platform. "We know that your username and identity are important, and we know that some of you might not like this change and find it annoying," "We know that your username and identity are important," and "We know that it might not be appealing to some of you."
According to Discord, the original aim behind the four-digit tags was to enable users with the flexibility to select any moniker of their choosing; however, this functionality is now deemed "technical debt." The company claims that the usernames are "too complicated or obscure" for the customers to remember them.
The new system will be implemented in "the coming weeks," and you will be alerted by message when it is possible. Discord says longtime users get priority over newcomers. Your friends can still find you after you alter your username and discriminator because it will remain an alias.
