Uvulopalatopharynoplasty act as a potential preventive of non-motor Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Neurons are the only cells in human body having limited period for their division although they constitute the most important organ of the human body that is the brain. At about 18months of age neuron stop its division, thereby keeping their number fixed for the lifetime. This lack of division of the neurons is mainly because of the absence of a particular structure called centriole, which helps in the cell division process. For this phenomena any kind of neurodegenerative disease have no prominent cure.
Parkinson’s disease, is a most common and progressive neurodegenerative disease, which is associated with several motor as well as non-motor problems. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (commonly called as sleep disorder) and several cognitive anomalies are common effect of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Dopaminergic therapy, which had been quite a bit of success in case of PD, which controls the motor symptoms but still failed miserably to reduce the progression of the disease.
Recently research has been mainly focused on reducing the effects of non-motor symptoms. In a cohort study patients suffering from the disease were divided to two sections. One half undergoing “Uvulopalatopharynoplasty” (UPPP), a surgery and other half who didn’t. The study revealed the greater progression of PD in the group of patients without any surgery. And in case of the other, Uvulopalatopharynoplasty mitigated the progression of disease.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common treatable sleep dysfunction. OSA is also associated with other lifestyle and cognitive problems. However this association of OSA with PD is very occasional, which is the reason for this interrelationship has not been properly studied. UPPP is also useful to reduce several other comorbidities that are seen in patients suffering from OSA. However, amidst all the positive results, the process UPPP encounters a lot of limitation like age group selection. Surgical treatments of OSA yields better result and also efficiency in the lower age group because of their enhanced bodily features rather than older people.
