Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems has created a new food quality visualization solution using time-temperature sensing ink to provide for the cost-effective monitoring of quality and waste reduction.
The solution is reliant upon ink that changes color over elapsed time and temperature without power or retrieval. The new initiative hopes to make tracking temperature-sensitive products easier and improve product value.
Temperature control is one of the critical aspects in the supply chain, especially in fresh produce and perishables. However, existing solutions such as temperature loggers can be expensive. According to Hitachi, this new innovation allows it to now offer a more practical and affordable solution.
The time-temperature sensing ink provides visual indicators of the accumulation of temperature over time. This enhances transparency and allows growers, retailers and wholesalers to optimise shipment and storage decisions.
This product label is covered with time-temperature sensing ink and contains a quality visualization application. Products have the label adhered and track its two-dimensional code. Accurate accumulated temperature data, predicting ripeness, and the best time for consumption are derived by scanning the label through the app.
In demonstrating with melons, Hitachi says the temperature trace of the ink matched traditional loggers and that the app predicted ripeness to allow stakeholders to make informed decisions and reduce waste.
