BASF Aroma Ingredients' Isobionics biotech brand is introducing two new natural flavor ingredients to the market.
Isobionics Natural Beta-Sinensal 20 and Isobionics Natural Alpha-Humulene 90 are both manufactured using a novel fermentation process, which is claimed to be a first in the flavor industry.
Based on coherent market insights, the food flavor industry is expected to grow at a strong CAGR of 4.6% over the period 2025-2032. The market is estimated to be valued at USD 19.34 Bn in 2025 and is expected to grow to USD 26.5 Bn by 2032.
The Natural Beta-Sinensal 20 ingredient possesses an aldehydic, citrus (mandarin and tangerine) peel odor and flavor, with a marine and algae character at a use level of 0.1-10ppm. As BASF reports, it enhances odor compositions with a fresh effect and taste compositions with a slightly metallic effect.
The principal benefit of the ingredient is that it is not derived from orange oil, thus providing opportunities for extensive usage in flavoring applications.
It can impart juiciness and freshness to various fruit flavors ranging from mango to berry, and all citrus flavorings, and can improve the organoleptic characteristics of orange oil products. It can also be applied to savoury products like fish, meat, and tomato flavors.
It can be marketed as natural flavoring preparation in the EU, with approval for FEMA/GRAS number anticipated in June 2025.
In the meantime, the Natural Alpha-Humulene 90 provides woody cedar, pine, damp wood and sawdust notes, with a 5-20ppm use level terpineol note. It provides a dry woody, resinous, piney and patchouli-like fragrance, with herbal and faint grapefruit undertones, and possesses high purity. It is ideal for non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, and is especially suited to mango, raspberry, mint and citrus flavour and hop oil uses.
Both of these new ingredients are free from pesticides, kosher, halal and ISO 22000-certified. They are made through fermentation of easily available renewable feedstocks, which are weather and harvest independent, BASF added, enabling it to provide consistent quality and supply assurance.
