Apple has released its first public Rapid Security Response upgrade, version 16.4.1 of iOS and version 13.3.1 of macOS.
iOS's "Rapid Security Response" has been in beta for a time. The company may rapidly distribute crucial security fixes to all iPhone owners without an iOS upgrade. iOS 16.4.1 users are receiving Apple's first public Rapid Security Response update. iOS 16.4.1 Fixes Critical Bugs
This update, discovered initially by Aaron Zollo on Twitter, is currently being sent out to iOS devices. Apple has not yet provided details on the nature of the security issues addressed by this update. Providing "important security fixes," Apple says "this Rapid Security Response" is required for all users. For iPhones, the update weighs in at about 85 megabytes. However, when some iPhone users try to install the update, they receive the error message "Unable to verify security response." Software updates for Macs, iPads, and iPhones now come in the form of Rapid Security Responses. They provide vital security upgrades to essential system libraries in between software updates, such as the Safari web browser, the WebKit framework stack, and so on. They could also be used to speed up the resolution of some security vulnerabilities, such as those that have been discovered through exploits or reports from the "wild."
Starting with iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1, and macOS 13.3.1, only the most recent versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are supported by new Rapid Security Responses. Macs running the newest public version of macOS 13.3.1 will also receive a separate Rapid Security Response update, which can only be downloaded and installed if the option to receive such updates has been activated.
