March 24, 2025 – U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. announced a new investment fund of about US$ 100 million (720 million yuan) to develop clean energy sources in China. This comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to Beijing this week.
The new massive investment is intended to expand clean energy capacity in China. It is a part of Apple’s wider goal to transition its supply chain to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
Apple’s RMB720 million aims to add around 550,000 megawatt-hours of solar and wind capacity to China’s grid each year. This number is expected to further increase as more investors join, creating high demand for renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, and energy storage solutions.
According to Coherent Market Insights (CMI), global demand for renewable energy technologies is projected to grow rapidly. Growing interest in renewable energy sources and increasing investments, such as that of Apple, will play a key role in shaping this growth.
“Growing environment concerns and rising interest in clean energy will continue to direct investments in renewable energy technologies, and Apple’s latest investment is solid proof. More companies and governments are expected to promote adoption of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and biofuels in the coming years. This is expected to create lucrative growth opportunities for manufacturers of renewable energy technologies,” says a senior analyst at CMI.”
Apple’s latest investment builds on the success of its first China Clean Energy Fund, launched in 2018. The second China Clean Energy Fund will deepen Apple’s collaboration with China-based suppliers to drive innovation, opportunity, and progress for a shared planet.
The second phase of China Clean Energy Fund is expected to support new renewable energy projects in different Chinese provinces. As a result, opportunities will crop up for domestic as well as international renewable energy technology manufacturers and suppliers.
Apart from helping China’s power grid become cleaner, the new investment will also advance Apple’s 2030 carbon neutrality goal. It will empower the company to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire carbon footprint over the next five years.
Apple’s increasing investments in clean energy across highly lucrative markets like China may encourage other multinational corporations (MNCs) to follow suit. This can create more demand for renewable energy technologies. Similarly, it can inspire other investors to pour more funds into green energy startups and projects, leading to the industry’s growth.
