Global Sonobuoy Market- Recent Developments
- In November 2022, leading UAV manufacturer UMS SKELDAR took an important step towards strengthening Canada's defense capabilities by signing a cooperation agreement with Ultra Maritime. This collaboration is made possible by the Department of Defense's (DND) Innovations for Defense Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program. This program fosters partnerships for the development of cutting-edge technologies in the defense sector. The main goal of this partnership is to investigate and assess the potential for enhancing advanced sonobuoy transport capabilities in the context of anti-submarine warfare (ASW). This technology will be integrated into UMS SKELDAR's state-of-the-art SKELDAR V-200 unmanned aerial system "UAS". Their ultimate goal is to provide the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with innovative and effective solutions.
- As on 2022, Saab AB, a renowned defense and aerospace company, received a prestigious master contract from the U.S. Navy Undersea Warfare Center Division in Newport for the development and production of the MK39 Expendable Mobile Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Training Target (EMATT). The MK39 EMATT is an innovative, compact sonobuoy-sized device that weighs less than 25 pounds and offers great versatility and functionality in marine training exercises. This state-of-the-art technology enables programmable simulation of a variety of ASW training scenarios, increasing the effectiveness of US Navy anti-submarine warfare training. With Saab AB at the forefront of this important project, the MK39 EMATT is poised to improve its ASW capabilities and play a key role in helping the Navy better prepare for potential submarine threats in the modern marine environment.
- In 2021, Elbit Systems America, the U.S. arm of Israel-based Elbit Systems, completed a US$ 380 million acquisition from Cerberus Capital Management of Sparton Co., a major supplier of sonobuoy to the U.S. Navy and allies. Under the agreement, Sparton Co. will operate as a subsidiary of Elbit America with an independent board of directors, allowing it to focus on subsea operations that are more sensitive to U.S. customers. Following the acquisition, Sparton Co. will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Elbit America, maintaining its identity and corporate structure while benefiting from the support and expertise of its parent company. A key aspect of the agreement is the creation of an independent board of directors for Spurton, which will ensure the company's autonomy and focus on highly sensitive subsea operations tailored to the specific needs of its U.S. customers.
- In March 2021, an important partnership was made between French multinational Thales, which specializes in defense and aerospace, and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). With a shared vision, the two companies have combined expertise and resources to develop a groundbreaking dual-frequency sonar demonstrator. This innovative sonar technology is intended to push the boundaries of underwater surveillance and improve naval capabilities in Japanese and French waters. The milestone was marked by the signing of a Defense Cooperation Agreement between France's Defense Acquisition Agency (DGA) and its Japanese counterpart, the Armed Forces Agency (ATLA). The agreement paves the way for joint research, development, and evaluation of dual-frequency sonar and reflects a strong commitment to international defense cooperation and mutual security interests between Japan and France. The cooperation aims to enhance the technical capabilities and operational readiness of the two navies so that they can better meet new challenges in submarine warfare and maintain their strategic advantage in securing maritime space.
