Potassium peroxymonosulfate or potassium monopersulfate is a white water soluble granular solid. Potassium peroxymonosulfate is a compound of triple salts including potassium monopersulfate, potassium bisulfate, and potassium sulfate and has molecular formula HKO6S.
Potassium peroxymonosulfate is used as an oxidizing agent in a broad array of consumer and electronic applications including oral hygiene products, pool & spa disinfections, printed circuit board etching, wool shrink proofing, paper recycling, laundry bleaches, and precious metal extraction.
Market Dynamics
Increasing demand for oxidizing agents for applications in water treatment and spa and laundry industries is a factor aiding in growth of the global potassium peroxymonosulfate market over the forecast period (2018-2025). The advantages of potassium peroxymonosulfate such as absence of chlorine and efficient oxidation, to produce clear and sparkling water in swimming pools is driving the market growth. In addition to this, it is used as a sanitizer in treatment of spa and swimming pools to oxidized organic contamination.
Rising paper recycling trend due to increasing awareness regarding eco-friendly paper is expected to positively impact growth of the potassium peroxymonosulfate market. This is owing to use of potassium peroymonosulfate in paper re-pulping and as recycled fiber additives. According to the American Forest and Paper Association, in 2016, around 90% of the manufacturers in the U.S. used recycled paper for manufacturing of tissue products, which led to high demand for potassium peroxymonosulfate.
A major restraining factor for growth of the market is availability of alternatives such as chloramine B, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, potassium peroxymonosulfate powder is more expensive than chlorine-based shock products and this is expected to negatively affect growth of the market.
Market Outlook
Key Players
Key players operating in the global potassium peroxymonosulfate market include DowDuPont, Inc., Lanxess AG, United Initiators, Ansin Chemical Co Ltd., Shangyu Jie Hua Chemical Co., Ltd. Merck KGaA, and Lonza.
Key players are strategically investing in mergers and acquisitions to enhance their market share and remain competitive in the market. For instance, in 2016, Lanxess—a leading chemical company—acquired Chemours Company, to expand business in water treatment focusing the distribution and production of the active ingredient such as potassium monopersulfate. The major core brand, Oxone is used in personal care, pool, and spa applications and the electronics industry and as active ingredient in the formulation of disinfection products.
