Global Ostomy Drainage Bags Market – Market Insights
Ostomy is a surgery carried out to create an opening or stoma from a locale present in the interior of the body to the exterior. It predominantly treats diseases related to urinary or digestive systems. Ostomy may be permanent or temporary. Some cases require permanent detachment or removal of an organ.
According to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), ostomy is broadly divided into three types namely ileostomy, colostomy, and urostomy. In ileostomy, the base of the ileum or small intestine is attached to the opening or stoma. This goes around the anus, colon, and rectum. In colostomy, the colon is linked with the stoma, thereby bypassing the anus and rectum. In urostomy, the pipes that carry urine are linked to the stoma, which helps in bypassing the bladder.
The global ostomy drainage bags market size was valued at US$ 2,347.1 million in 2017 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.7% over the forecast period (2018–2026).

Increasing incidence of colorectal cancer and ostomy procedures is expected to propel the global ostomy drainage bags market growth.
Increasing incidence of conditions such as colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease is a major factor driving the market growth, as colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy procedures are done as a part of treatment for these medical conditions.
According to the American Cancer Society (ASC) 2017, colorectal cancer is the third-most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S., estimating around 97,220 new cases of colon cancer and 43,030 new cases of rectal cancer in the country in 2017. Increasing prevalence of colostomy and rectal cancer would necessitate ostomy procedures, which in turn is expected to drive growth of the global ostomy drainage bags market.
Furthermore, increasing number of ostomy procedures result in creating stoma (opening) for eliminating the body wastes into the prosthetic known as ostomy bags outside the body, which is increasing the demand for ostomy drainage bags.
According to the survey by American Medical Association and American College of Surgeons, in 2016, around 120,000 patients undergo urinary ostomy procedures annually and around 1 million patients have stomas at any given time in North America. In 2016, the Cancer Research UK, around 69% of bowel cancer patients underwent emergency surgeries needed a colostomy bag.
However, patients undergone ostomy procedures experience various types of discomfort or problems. According to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), around 20 to 70% of ostomates experience stoma-related complications once after the surgery. NCBI further states that peristomal skin complications occur in 25–43% of patients with ileostomies and 7–20% of those with colostomies.

Increasing technological advancements to bolster the market growth
Market players are focused on improving their product portfolio by providing innovative products and technological advancements to manage leaks and skin issues, as these are major reasons that contribute to hospital readmissions of ostomy patients.
In 2013, 11 Health Ltd., a U.K.-based company, developed a sensor-based technology named Ostom-i Alert that accurately measures drainage pouch fullness by sensing the arc of the bag's external curvature. The device warns the patients and caregivers by sending messages via Bluetooth to a mobile app when the ostomy bags are close to being full, as the bags are prone to overflows and leaks.
Furthermore, in 2014, ConvaTec launched an innovative ostomy pouch named Esteem one-piece pouch with a clinically-proven skin and leak protection of moldable technology for patients with ostomy. Study conducted by the company further stated that around 95% of the patients using the moldable technology product kept their skin healthy and over 86% with pre-existing skin disorders showed improved skin after switching to moldable technology.
