In  2021, according to a study analyzing 623 cases of contact lens related keratitis in the U.S. from 2015-2019, orthokeratology lens use was associated with the highest risk and worst visual outcomes compared to other types of contact lenses. Parents and individuals are wary of the infection risks, thus, decreasing its demand. Several government regulatory bodies like the U.S. FDA have issued warnings about orthokeratology lens usage, emphasizing the need for proper fitting and handling to reduce risks. Doctors are also reluctant to widely prescribe orthokeratology lenses until safety improves.
