Motion preservation devices are used to treat spinal disorders such as spinal stenosis, which is very common and occur in both men and women. These devices are also used to restore and maintain the alignment of spine as per normal. Motion preservation devices follow usually a minimally invasive procedure, which preserves or re-generate normal motion of spine. This disorder most commonly occurs in geriatric population, as ageing causes some structural changes in human spine such as thickening of tissue’s band (which supports spine) and enlargement of bones and joints.

Global Motion Preservation Devices Market Drivers

Recent trends such as merger & acquisitions are expected to support the global motion preservation devices market growth. For instance, in March 2019, RTI Surgical Holdings acquired Paradigm Spine LLC, a provider of the product ‘Coflex’ (interlinear stabilization device). Moreover, DePuy-Synthes acquired Emerging Implant Technologies GmbH (EIT) in 2018, for 3D-printed titanium implants, which are used in treatment of spinal disorders. Furthermore, CTL Medical acquired spine business of Amedica Corporation and became CTL Amedica in 2018. Orthofix also acquired Spinal Kinetics in 2018, for ‘M6’ artificial discs to strengthen their product portfolio. Moreover, companies such as Globus Medical have product line for motion preservation treatment such as Acadia, Secure-C, and Triumph. Acadia is a motion sparing facet replacement technology, Secure-C is a cervical artificial disc, and Triumph is a lumbar disc. Mobi-C cervical disc of Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc. is the first cervical disc replacement approved by U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013 for both one and two-level indications.

Companies such as Centinel Spine, LLC are planning to launch patient education and support programs in July 2019, for creating awareness among people. In 2015, Arthrosurface, Inc. launched the motion preserving WristMotion hemiarthroplasty implant. It is designed to preserve more bone than other implants, therefore, it is widely accepted treatment mode for motion preservation. In 2018, Globus Medical, Inc. acquired Nemaris Inc., a provider of product Surgimap a ‘surgical planning software’, which will help healthcare professionals to identify possible surgical outcomes and share medical imaging to improve procedural workflow and patient care. Such initiatives can help in providing better treatment to patients and will drive the global motion preservation devices market growth.

Global Motion Preservation Devices Market Restraints

Major factors restraining global motion preservation devices market growth are high cost of treatment, as these devices are very costly and cost of surgery is also high. It is not affordable to majority of population in emerging economies. Major limitation in motion preservation treatment includes fusion of one or more segments, which leads to changes in biomechanics of spine affecting the lumbar spine mobility. This affects patient’s ability to adjust the spine position while performing routine activities such as switching from the sitting to standing position or vice versa. These factors are expected to restrain global motion preservation devices market growth up to certain extent.

Global Motion Preservation Devices Market Regional Analysis

North America region is expected to hold dominant position in the global motion preservation devices market, owing to increasing number of motion preservation device approvals in the region for treatment of various spinal injuries. According to National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Centre (NSCISC), in U.S there is an increase in prevalence of spinal injuries (17,500 Spinal Injury cases each year), which is expected to boost the global motion preservation devices market growth over the forecast period. In Europe, leading manufacturers such as SpineVision offers FlexPLUS, a motion-preservation device. Major players such as Medtronic and Zimmer Biomet offer several products for motion preservation in this region such as artificial discs and bone sparing technology respectively. According to European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), in 2014, around 59% of adults reported in Poland are suffering from health problems or chronic disease related to spine. Their major complaint was about lower back pain. According to same source 28.4% of females and 21.2% of males aged 15 years and above were followed by neck pain and 19% of women and 12.9% of men suffered from middle back pain in Poland. Such incidences may result in complications, which can lead to necessity of surgical intervention for such conditions, which is expected to boost global motion preservation devices market growth.
