In May 2022, GE Renewable Energy, a US$ 16 billion company specializing in renewable technologies, signed a contract to implement the most significant technological upgrade of the Itaipu hydropower facility, located on the border of Brazil and Paraguay. This project, led by GE's Hydro and Grid Solutions divisions, aims to modernize the world's second-largest hydropower plant, which has been operational since 1984 and has an installed capacity of 14 GW. The upgrade is expected to take 14 years and will enhance all 20 power generating units along with the plant's measurement, protection, control, regulation, and monitoring systems.
In February 2022, ANDRITZ, an international technology group offering a broad portfolio of innovative plants, equipment, systems and services for various industries including hydropower, received an order from Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited to modernize another generating unit at the Jebba hydroelectric power plant on the Niger River in Nigeria. Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited is a privately owned power generating company in Nigeria incorporated in 2011 and licensed to operate the Kainji and Jebba Hydroelectric Power Plants through a concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
