Restraints
Europe Trash Bags Market
Various governments in Europe are imposing restrictions on the use of plastic bags in order to reduce their plastic footprint. These regulations are expected to result in a ban on the use of plastics and can impact growth of the trash bags market in Europe over the forecast period.
In April 2015, European Commission’s Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste was amended by Directive 2015/720 (EU, 2015) with respect to lightweight plastic carrier bags. The amended article urges member states to take certain measures to achieve a sustained reduction in the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags. Such measures ensured an annual consumption of maximum 90 lightweight plastic carrier bags per person in December 2019 and 40 lightweight plastic carrier bags per person by December 31, 2025.
Increasing waste generation is expected to drive demand for trash bags over the forecast period. According to European Commission, 492 kg of municipal waste per capita was generated in 2018. In total, 220 million tons of municipal waste was generated in Europe in 2018, which was slightly higher than the municipal waste generated in 2017 (218 million tons). Among EU countries, Denmark generated the most municipal waste per person that was 766 kg waste per capita in 2018. Other EU countries that generated more than 600 kg of municipal waste per person include Malta (640 kg waste), Cyprus (637 kg waste), Germany (615 kg waste), and Luxembourg (610 kg waste).
Growing need for waste management is expected to foster the trash bags market growth in Europe. According to the directive made by European Commission named as ‘separate waste collection’ mandatory in 2015, which means that waste will be separately collected as paper, metal, plastic, and glass waste, to improve waste management practices. The commission is also planning to launch a separate collection system for bio-wastes by December 31, 2023, and a system for textile and hazardous household wastes by January 1, 2025. These directives or regulations on waste management are expected to drive demand for trash bags over the forecast period. The European Commission directive 2018/851 recital 41 illustrates the importance of separate collection of waste. It states that separate collection of wastes increases recycling rates, enables high quality recycling, and boosts the uptake of quality secondary raw materials.
