Endometrial ablation is process that facilitates the destruction of endometrium or thin layer of the uterine wall, in context to treat abnormal heavy uterine bleeding if not controlled with any means of medication. Endometrial ablation is not recommended in women with disorders of endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia, cancer of uterus, recent pregnancy and certain infections of uterus, as per the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). Depending on technique and type of patient under treatment, different endometrial ablation methods are present which includes such as Radiofrequency, heated fluid, heated balloon, electrosurgery, freezing, microwave ablation techniques.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 10 million American women are affected with heavy bleeding (menorrhagia) each year. The likely cause of abnormal bleeding includes hormonal imbalance disturbance in post menopause, fibroids or polyps in uterus, birth control pills, endometrium cancer and use of intrauterine device (IUD).
Endometrial ablation are generally done through either resectoscopic ablation or non-resectoscopic ablation techniques. Resectoscopic ablation is minimal invasive technique to treat ablation by using hysteroscope to visually guide the process. Conversely non-resectoscopic ablation is performed with device inserted in uterine cavity and destroy uterine lining uniformly. Both the techniques are efficient in providing the relief to patient and reduction of menstrual bleeding. Due to the fact that, non-resectoscopic methods requires less specialized training, shorter operative time and they can be performed in outpatient setting, it is a widely preferred ablation technique over resectoscopic ablation.
With the growing prevalence of gynecology disorders such as ovarian cysts, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), acne, genital tract infections, Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, abnormal endometrium bleeding, global adoption of endometrial ablation devices would increase dramatically leading to the growth of endometrial ablation market in near future.
