Key Developments
Increasing research and development activities related to basil and basil extracts is expected to boost the market growth. For instance, in July 2019, researchers from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan, synthesized silver nanoparticles using callus extract of purple basil and anthocyanin extract derived from the same plant and systematically investigated their antiproliferative potential against HepG2 liver carcinoma cells.
In March 2019, researchers from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens analyzed both nonpolar and polar extracts of Ocimum sanctum L (holy basil) and studied the cytotoxic activity of its secondary metabolites. The extracts yielded fourteen compounds, of which rabdosiin demonstrated potential as a selective anticancer drug scaffold.
In April 2018, researchers from All India Institute of Medical Sciences assessed beneficial effects of Ocimum sanctum in experimental pulmonary hypertension in rats and found that Ocimum sanctum has therapeutic ability against Monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension in rat, which are attributed to its antioxidant effect.
