In June 2018, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) formed a joint-venture with Chempolis Oy (Finland based supplier of bio-refinery technologies) and Fortum 3 BV (Netherlands based energy company) to form Assam Bio-Refinery Pvt Ltd (ABRPL). The new company, ABRPL will generate bio-ethanol, other chemicals and electricity using bamboo biomass.

In April 2018, BAP Industries (Guatemala based manufacturer of pulp and associated paper & textile products) signed a 10-year exclusive bamboo purchase agreement with EcoPlanet Bamboo Group. BAP will invest in construction and operation of bamboo bio-refinery and associated paper mill. The plant will be located in Nicaragua and will have the capacity to process 2,50,000 metric tons of bamboo annually.
