Mercury-free dental implants are tooth root replacements, capped with a ceramic dental crown. The crown (replacement tooth) is connected to the implant with an abutment. Zirconia implants are new implants in the dental implant field. In the U.S., dentists have been using Zirconia for implants since 2007 (Europe since the late 1980’s) while dentists have been using Titanium for dental implants since the 1960’s. Both materials are biocompatible offering high acceptance rates with the body promoting osseointegration which means bone can grow around the implant material just as it does around natural tooth roots. Currently, most U.S. FDA approved Zirconia implants are one piece. This means that the synthetic tooth root and the abutment are connected whereas they are two pieces with Titanium dental implants giving the dentist more control over a few elements of the entire implant placement process.
Market Dynamics
The increasing prevalence of dental carries because of poor oral hygiene is expected to contribute to the mercury-free dental implants materials market growth during the forecast period. For instance, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study, in 2016, around 3.58 billion people, globally, were affected with dental caries (tooth decay) in permanent teeth. Moreover, according to the WHO, in 2012, around 60-90% of children had dental cavities and around 15-20% of the population in the age group of 35-44 suffered from severe periodontal disease globally. The factors leading to oral health diseases include unhealthy diet, tobacco use, excess alcohol consumption, and poor oral hygiene.
However, growth of the global mercury-free dental implant market is expected to be hampered during the forecast period owing to product recalls of dental implants. For instance, in November 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a notice to recall Tapered Screw-Vent MTX Model TSVTB11 developed by Zimmer Dental Inc. dental implant vial caps in the recalled implant lot. Distribution of this product in the U.S., Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain has been stopped after the announcement of this recall.
