Bio adhesives are naturally present polymeric material and possess adhesive properties. Synthetic bio adhesives are also available in the market and have different applications such as the protection of tissues, promoting wound healing, a replacement for surgical sutures, and a replacement for conventional drug delivery systems. Bio adhesives are biocompatible products and hence are often used in biological applications and mainly in surgeries as sealants. Tissue adhesives are liquid monomers that undergo an exothermic reaction upon exposure to a moist surface (skin), changing to a polymer that forms a strong tissue bond. The wound edges are approximated and two to three layers of tissue adhesive are applied. Sealants are often used to fill gaps and resist relative movement of the surfaces to which they are applied. Even though adhesives are generally stronger, sealants provide the assembly with much more flexibility.
Topical tissue glues/adhesives are used to treat selected superficial skin wounds. They consist of liquid cyanoacrylate monomers which polymerize into long chains that hold wound edges together when they come into contact with blood or a wound surface. Tissue adhesives and sealants have revolutionized hemostasis and wound management in traumatic and surgical injuries. Various biological-driven glues and synthetic adhesives are clinically utilized either as an adjunct to conventional hemostats and wound closure techniques, such as suturing or as a replacement to them. The ability to effectively and promptly control bleeding, thus, reducing the risk of complications due to severe blood loss, in addition to convenience of use render medical adhesive a highly suitable tool for wound management. Tissue adhesives are increasingly gaining popularity in diverse areas of clinical applications, including wound closure and healing, drug delivery, implantation of medical devices, tissue engineering, and dental and bone applications.
Market Dynamics
Increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies, such as acquisitions by key players in the market to expand their product portfolio, is expected to drive market growth over the forecast period. For instance, In December 2021, the BD Company sealed the deal to acquire the self-adhesive surgical sealant business of the Tissuemed, with the aim to boost the portfolio and expand the surgical offerings across the world.
