An ambulatory surgery center is a healthcare facility that often performs surgical medical procedures that do not require a patient to stay overnight or admit the patient for required treatment. Ambulatory surgery centers are usually either independent medical facilities or part of larger healthcare organizations. These centers offer patients several advantages over traditional hospital-based surgical procedures, such as shorter waiting times, lower costs, and less exposure to infectious diseases. Outpatient usually means "to go", but in the context of surgery it means patients who can leave the hospital on the same day as the surgery without staying in the hospital. Ambulatory surgery has another name, often called minimally invasive surgery, open surgery or same-day surgery.
Market Dynamics
In U.S, many ambulatory surgery centers are operate through companies. Large companies are opening chains of open surgery centers to increase their presence in the market, owing to advantages offered by ambulatory surgery centres. The decrease in the number of hospitals forces hospitals to work together with doctors and businesses to open an open surgery center. For instance, on June 21, 2022, according to Becker Ambulatory Surgery Centre Review Report, United Surgical Partners International, an U.S. based ambulatory care company, and United Urology Group, one of the nation’s largest networks of urology affiliate practices formed a joint venture in 22 ambulatory surgery centres. United Surgical Partners International acquired a portion of United Urology Group's investment in Ambulatory surgery centres located in Maryland, Colorado, and Arizona. The joint venture owns and operates the ambulatory surgery centres, and USPI provides administrative and support services to the ambulatory surgery centres.
