A surgical hemostat is a surgical tool used to control bleeding. It is common in the initial phases of surgery for the initial incision to be lined with hemostats that close blood vessels awaiting ligation. Internal tissue sealants are absorbable materials used to control internal bleeding by sealing the tissue. Thus, they can prevent leaks of fluid from the surgical incision. These are surgical glues and adhesives used for attaching tissue to one other to help in repair. While, adhesion barriers are the medical implants used to prevent the formation of internal adherence between tissues, and organs when they are healing. Drugs and materials such as animal membranes, gold foil, mineral oil, sheets of rubber, and Teflon are used to reduce the risk of adhesion formation. These three surgical materials are used to control bleeding during and after surgical procedures.
Market Dynamics
Increasing incidences of accidents and burns, increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, and approvals of new products by regulatory authorities are attributed to the growth of the global surgical hemostats, internal tissue sealants, and adhesion barriers market. For instance, on February 23, 2021, EndoClot Plus Inc., a U.S.-based medical device company, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval (FDA) for its product EndoClot Polysaccharide Hemostatic System (EndoClot PHS), an innovative product that helps to stop gastrointestinal bleeding rapidly and reliably. EndoClot PHS is a single-use device including a starch-based powder hemostat that is applied directly to the bleeding site through a flexible endoscope. The Absorbable Modified Polymer (AMP) powder can quickly concentrate the blood to accelerate the normal physiological clotting process. A gelled matrix forms when the AMP powder contacts blood or fluid in the GI tract to provide a mechanical barrier to further control bleeding.
