Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive medical procedure involving the ablation of targeted dysfunctional tissues via the generation of heat from high frequency alternative current. It functions by converting electrical energy to heat energy and then utilizing the concepts of hyperthermia to burn the unwanted or affected tissue, leaving behind a scar which eventually heals in time.
RFA devices use an electrosurgical generator connected to bipolar electrode arrays to deliver thermal energy to tissue. Electricity travels through tissue between alternating positive and negative poles along the electrode arrays of the RFA device in the radiofrequency range of 450 to 500 kHz. RF ablation results in coagulative necrosis of tissue from high temperatures. The dipole molecules (mostly water) immediately next to the tip of the RF electrode attempt to remain aligned in the direction of the current and are forced to vibrate as rapidly as alternating current is applied.
Market Dynamics
The increasing organic growth strategies, such as product launches, by key market players to expand their product portfolios is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in November 2020, Abbott, a healthcare company, announced the launch of IonicRF Generator, a new device to deliver a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment for the management of pain in the nervous system. IonicRF Generator is a radiofrequency ablation device that uses heat to target specific nerves and block pain signals from reaching the brain. Radio frequency ablation has been used to treat pain, such as low back pain and Sacroiliac joint (buttocks) pain that fails to get resolved by conservative treatments such as physical therapy, injections, or medication.
