A peripherally inserted central catheters is a device used to draw blood and give treatments, including intravenous fluids, drugs, or blood transfusions. A thin, flexible tube is inserted into a vein in the upper arm and guided (threaded) into a large vein above the right side of the heart called the superior vena cava. A needle is inserted into a port outside the body to draw blood or give fluids. A peripherally inserted central catheter may stay in place for weeks or months and helps avoid the need for repeated needle sticks, also called PICC. These are longer than regular IV and goes near or inside heart. Other end of it remains outside the body, usually where arm bends. End of each line is covered with a cap. A patient can get medicine, fluids, blood or nutrition through these lines. Blood can also be drawn through these lines. PICC lines are used instead of regular IV because they are thicker and more durable. They can go farther into vein. These can also stay in place for longer duration (upto 3 months). It also lowers the number of needle sticks needed to draw blood. Patients can get large amounts of fluids or medicines (like chemotherapy) that might not go through regular IVs. PICC lines are used in serious infections to give antibiotics, in cancer chemotherapy, and blood tests, in IV nutrition, and if patients requires many blood transfusions.
Market Dynamics
Increasing launches of new products, and mergers and acquisitions by key market players is expected to drive the global peripherally inserted central catheters market growth. For instance, on September 27, 2022, B. Braun Medical Inc., a U.S.-based medical equipment and devices company, announced it had acquired the innovative Clik-FIX catheter securement device portfolio from Starboard Medical, Inc., a U.S.-based medical device company. B. Braun's acquisition builds on the company's history of product and program innovation to improve the patient experience and outcomes with peripheral intravenous (IV) therapy. The Clik-FIX portfolio acquisitions include- Clik-FIX Peripheral, Clik-FIX PICC/Central, Clik-FIX Universal, Clik-FIX Neonatal PICC, and Clik-FIX Soft PICC/Central. The addition of the Clik-FIX portfolio combined with B.Braun’s expertise and commercial capabilities is with the aim to meet customers' needs. This will extend position in IV therapy.
