A microkeratome is a high-precision surgical instrument used for Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). The normal human cornea varies from around 500 to 600 micrometer in thickness; and in the LASIK procedure, the microkeratome creates an 83 to 200 micrometer thick flap. Microkeratome Lasik is a surgical procedure used to correct vision problems. It involves the use of a microkeratome to create a flap in the cornea, and then the laser is used to reshape the cornea. Microkeratome Lasik is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a special instrument to create a thin flap in the cornea. The surgeon then folds back the flap and uses an excimer laser to remove some tissue from the underlying cornea. This is a type of refractive surgery, which means it is used to correct refractive errors. These are problems with the way the eye focuses light, which can result in blurry vision. Microkeratome Lasik is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. This helps to improve vision by changing the shape of the cornea. This surgery has been shown to be safe and effective, and it can often improve vision by several lines on the eye chart. This piece of equipment is used all around the world to cut the cornea flap. A microkeratome comprises an oscillating blade that is intended to create the corneal flap for surgeries allied to refractive errors. This surgical instrument is used in Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) to cut a reedy layer from the cornea’s back which is then relocated into the inheritor’s cornea. The microkeratome and vacuum units are assembled, tested, and inspected before the surgery to confirm appropriate functioning. The rising prevalence of eye disorders and the growing geriatric population are expected to propel the global microkeratome market growth over the forecast period.

Market Dynamics

Factors such as the rising prevalence of eye disorders, such as uncorrected eye cataract, and refractive errors, and the growing geriatric population are expected to propel the global microkeratome market over the forecast period. For instance, in October 2022, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), uncorrected cataracts and refractive errors are the leading cause of vision impairment. In 2021, at least 2.2 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment due to cataract and refractive errors. Nearly half of these cases, or at least 1 billion, involved vision damage that either might have been avoided or is still unaddressed.
