An ultrasonic probe cover is a physical barrier which is used during ultrasound procedure to avoid cross contamination. Some of the ultrasound procedures which involve the use of ultrasonic probe covers include endocavity exam, general purpose exam, and surgical-intraoperative procedures. In an endocavity exam ultrasound is used to get endovaginal and endorectal images. In general purpose exam the ultrasound is used directly on the skin of the patient and surgical-intraoperative procedures are carried out in the operating room. Ultrasonic probes must always be covered with latex sheath for diagnostic scanning in case of non-interventional transvaginal or transrectal exams. Interventional endocavity ultrasound procedures such as prostate biopsies, ovarian biopsies, egg retrieval, and others require the probe sheath or cover to be sterile as the probe may be in contact with the vascular system of the patient. Usage of sterile probe covers give an advantage of protection against microbial contamination that may happen in the course of the ultrasound examination. If a patient is allergic to latex, a latex free probe cover may be used during ultrasound procedures. Latex free probe covers also provide comfort to the patient during invasive ultrasound scanning. Latex free probe covers are made of materials such as polyethylene and polyurethane.
Market Dynamics
The increasing incidence of hospital acquired infections, rising research and development activities for the development of more effective medical ultrasonic probe covers, and increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies such as acquisitions, partnerships, collaborations, and mergers by key players operating in the market, are the major factors that are expected to drive growth of the global medical ultrasonic probe covers market over the forecast period.
For instance, according to the data published in the American Journal of Infection Control in 2018, around 5% to 47% of invasive ultrasound procedures in the U.S. did not use high level disinfection or sterilization which may increase the risk of hospital acquired infections such as pseudomonas infection, human papilloma virus (HPV), hepatitis B, staphylococcus infection, and others.
