Lab automation utilizes high-end automated equipment such as automated liquid handling system, micro-plate reader, and automated storage and retrieval system. It also includes software to perform a variety of routine lab procedure such as sample analysis, assay performance, mixing of samples, storage of samples, and many other procedures. Lab automation allows improved productivity with less operational-time and more accuracy by minimizing the human error in the operational tasks. Automated liquid handling system can perform three different procedures simultaneously such as sample preparation, reagent addition to different plates having samples, and movement of lab wares from periphery to front area of the desk. Lab Automation is a multi-disciplinary approach to develop and optimize technologies in the laboratory, in order to improve the medical tests and processes. It has replaced the manual steps with automated processes, which were potentially dangerous and error-prone. There are basically three types of automation: Pre-analytical, analytical automation and post-analytical automation. Any stage from sample/reagent storage all the way through preparation and addition is referred to as pre-analytical. Pre-analytical error has been estimated to occur up to 70% of the time and is caused by things like wrong amounts, poor storage, and labelling. The final steps of the experimental process include sample management, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting. After testing, tested samples are archived using automated technology, minimising mistakes from erroneous labelling or storage. Samples from the repository can also be easily accessed if more analysis is required. Total lab automation occurs when all three steps—pre-analysis, analysis, and post-analysis—are automated; subtotal automation occurs when only two of the three phases are automated.
Market Dynamics
Increasing acquisitions by the key players for lab automation are expected to propel the market growth during the forecast period. For instance, in February 2022, ZEON CORPORATION, a chemical manufacturer that focuses on the manufacturing and development of synthetic rubbers, synthetic latex, and resins, announced the acquisition of Aurora Microplates, a manufacturer of high-performance micro plates, for discovery sciences and biochemical analysis. Under this acquisition, Zeon will accelerate business development in healthcare and life sciences in the European and the U.S. market.
