Sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate (SNF) also called polynaphthalene sulphonate (PNS) is derived from the chemical industry. Petroleum or coal tar naphthalene is sulphonated using very concentrated sulphuric acid at high temperature and is then polymerized with formaldehyde and neutralized to the sodium (Na) or calcium (Ca) salt. The polymers have a low molecular weight, with the sulphonated naphthalene repeating unit typically ranging from 2 to 10, resulting in molecular weights of 500–2500. The higher molecular weights generally give better properties.
Government of India is investing significantly on infrastructure development. Government of India is undertaking several initiatives for rural and smart urban infrastructure development such as Smart Cities Mission, The Amrut Project, Public & Private Partnership projects, and incentives for developing Special Economic Zone (SEZs). India sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde market is characterized by presence of large number of unorganized public and private players. Therefore, the competition is high in the market.
Several alternatives to sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde are available in the market such as polycarboxylic ether and lignosulfonates. Fluctuating raw material prices and stringent trade regulations such as anti-dumping duty, imposed on sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde products adversely affects profit margins. These factors are likely expected to hamper the growth of sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde market. However, sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde is effective and shows superior superplasticizer properties as compared to other super plasticizers.
Sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde is a derivative of naphthalene. Naphthalene derivatives are used in a wide variety of end-use industries such as building & construction, agrochemicals, textiles, detergent, oil & gas, paints & coating, pulp & paper, pharmaceuticals, rubber synthesis, and leather tanning. Among these industries, the building & construction industry is growing rapidly in the emerging countries such as India, which will play a significant role in providing growth opportunities to the naphthalene derivatives in the future. The growth of naphthalene derivative eventually helps in the growth of sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde market.
