Coronary stents (CS) are expandable tubular metallic devices, which are introduced into the coronary arteries that shows stenosis due to an underlying atherosclerosis disease. This revascularization procedure is termed as a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary angioplasty with stent placement.
There are main types of stents:
- Bare metal stents (BMS)
- Drug eluting stents (DES)
- Bioresorbable scaffold system (BRS)
- Drug- Eluting balloons (DEB).
DES consists of three components: a metallic stent platform, an active pharmacological drug agent, and a carrier vehicle. Stainless steel or cobalt-chromium is the most common metal and gives long-term mechanical stability to counteract vascular recoil. The drug release is carried out by diffusion through pores in the polymeric coating. While DEB has only antiproliferative drug coating without an underlying metallic structure of the stent, BRS is also devoid of metallic structure and is entirely resorbed in a few months after serving their purpose. Other stents such as bifurcation stents and covered stents are designed for special circumstances such as lesion over vascular bifurcation or coronary artery perforation, respectively.
Market Dynamics
The demand for coronary stents is anticipated to be driven by an ageing population and an increase in the prevalence of risk factors such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), complicated lesions, diabetes, obesity, and others. Apart from these governments initiative to reduce the prices of coronary stent by adding them in the list of essential medicines have promoted to shift the customers from the by-pass surgeries to the PCI procedure. For instance, according to report shared on January 13, 2020, the total stents used in India (Indian as well as imported) were 4,50,000 before price cap while they increased in 6,00,000 after the price cap in India.
