High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a novel, non-invasive treatment that is used to treat a wide range of tumors and diseases. HIFU uses an ultrasound transducer that has higher energy as compared to those used for diagnostic imaging. The transducer focuses on sound waves to generate heat at a single point within the body and destroys the target tissue. MRI images are used to plan the treatment and monitor the degree of heating in real time. Deep tissue penetration and thermal and mechanical interactions with human tissue are possible with ultrasound. With the development of high intensity focused ultrasound, a number of solid malignant tumors, such as those of the pancreas, liver, kidney, bone, prostate, and breast, as well as uterine fibroids and soft-tissue sarcomas, are clinically treatable. High intensity focused ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging can be combined to provide real-time imaging during ablation. HIFU has advantages such as:
- It requires no surgical incisions into your body (it’s non-invasive) and doesn’t use radiation
- It can exactly target diseased tissue, leaving non-targeted healthy tissue unharmed
- It’s an outpatient procedure with a short recovery time. Patient can usual routine within a few days
- HIFU results in a quicker recovery than other, more invasive types of therapy in cancer treatment such as Radiation Therapy, Stem Cell Transplant among others
HIFU is also used in the treatment of facial aging. According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, nonsurgical ultrasound treatments such as HIFU can:
- Tighten the skin on the neck
- Reduce the appearance of jowls
- Lift drooping eyelids or eyebrows
- Smooth wrinkles on the face
- Smooth and tighten chest skin
Market Dynamics
Increasing prevalence of rectal cancer is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, according to American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), in May 2022, 732,210 people were diagnosed with rectal cancer in the year 2020.
Increasing number of research and development activities by research institutes is expected to drive the market growth over forecast period. For instance, Institute Mutualiste Montsouris, a General hospital in France, initiated a study to investigate the efficacy and safety of terbinumab combined with chemotherapy in neoadjuvant therapy of triple-negative breast cancer after HIFU therapy. The study is in phase 2 of clinical trials and is expected to complete by December 2024.
