Hearing loss is the inability to hear any kind of sounds, whereas deafness is the inability to know and understand speech heard even after the sound is amplified. Intense deafness means an individual cannot hear at all, characterized by the inability to detect or identify sound, even at the highest volume. Hearing loss may happen due to several reasons such as genetic causes, complications in birth, ear infections, infectious diseases, and exposure to excessive noise. Hearing protection devices are used to protect from noise-induced hearing loss.
Market Dynamics
Increasing incidence of hearing loss is expected to drive the global hearing protection devices market growth.
According to World Health organization (WHO) in 2018, overall 5% of the world population suffered hearing loss from exposure to loud noise, around 1.1 billion young people (aged 12–35 years) are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings. According to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) 2017, in U.S., 2-3 in every 1,000 children are born with hearing loss, naturally, in either one or both ears, and around 15% of teenagers have some level of hearing loss.
In 2014, the Noise and Health Organization in Accura, Ghana conducted the study, in which 101 mill workers were included. According to the study result, around 23.7% workers of these workers were reported to have hearing loss. Moreover, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, there are around 74% of hearing loss cases in the U.S. due to loud noise at manufacturing sites.
Furthermore, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS), hearing loss due to loud noise is responsible of several other illness (such as hypertension, ischemic heart diseases, and sleep disturbance) for workers working at manufacturing site. Moreover, according to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 2016, around 15% of the adults in the U.S. (37.5 million) in the age group of 18 years and above, reported hearing trouble.
Increase in mergers and acquisitions are expected to drive growth of the global hearing protection devices market
Manufactures are focused on adoption of strategies such as mergers and acquisitions to expand their offerings and global presence in the market. For instance, in 2015, EERS Global Technologies Inc., acquired Sonomax, a provider of hearing protection devices.
Moreover, in August 2015, 3M acquired Capital Safety, a provider of fall protection equipment. The acquisition has helped 3M to meet the growing demand for personal protective equipment driven by worker safety in developed and emerging economies.
North America is expected to hold a dominant position in the global hearing protection devices market, according to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) 2017, as an estimated one-third of all impaired hearing cases are related to noise exposure in U.S. Moreover, according to NCBI, occupational noise exposure is the one of the most common causes of noise induced hearing loss in the U.S.
According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 2016, around 10% of the U.S. adult population (or about 25 million people in the U.S.) has experienced tinnitus lasting almost 5 to 6 minutes. Increasing workforce at construction or manufacturing sites, and rising adoption of hearing control devices in developed regions is expected to boost growth of the hearing protection market.
