Glycobiology is the branch of science which deals with the study of Glycan and glycan-modified biomolecules such as glycolipids, glycoproteins and glycosylated small molecules collectively referred to as sugar molecules. Glycan are universal in all aspects of life. The binding of carbohydrate structures to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, metabolites, and nucleic acids, can profoundly affect their physicochemical properties, subcellular localization, immunogenicity, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
All cells and many proteins such as glycoproteins are covered with dense and complex arrays of covalently linked sugar chains (called oligosaccharides or glycan). The biological roles of these glycan are of particular importance in the assembly of complex multicellular organs and organisms, processes that require interactions between cells and with the surrounding extracellular matrix. Most classes of glycan are found on the surface of cells and secreted macromolecules. In addition, simple, rapidly metabolizing protein-bound glycan are abundant in the nucleus and cytoplasm, where they function as regulatory switches.
Glycan are diverse and complex molecules whose functions are determined by their unique structures. Glycan structures requires effective enzymatic tools and analytical techniques and can be associated with specific functions. Glycosylation defines the adhesive properties of proteins and cells. The immune system functions primarily through carbohydrate-protein interactions, highlighting the importance of carbohydrates in physiology, pathogen recognition, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.
Market Dynamics
Major factors driving growth of the glycobiology market include adoption of inorganic growth strategies such as acquisitions by key players in the market. For instance, in June, 2018, Agilent Technologies, an American life science company, has acquired privately held ProZyme Inc., a provider of glycan analysis, reagents and kits. This acquisition will help the company expand its glycobiology product portfolio
