A fall detection system is a device that is used to alert emergency services in the event of a fall. Such devices have the potential to mitigate some of the adverse consequences of a fall. Accelerometers, a class of low power radio wave technology sensor, are used by fall detection systems to track the user's movements. Modern fall detection systems use three-axis accelerometers, similar to those used in smartphones and smartwatches. Some fall detection systems employ a built-in tri-axial accelerometer and proprietary BioSensics algorithms.

By spotting sudden changes in bodily movement, fall warning detectors can determine when a user has unexpectedly fallen. The system can assess a person's posture, activity level, and how smoothly their movements accelerate. The majority of typical fall-related movements are reliably picked up by automatic fall detection equipment. The device's fall detection algorithm is tuned for operation when it's hanging around your neck. However, some slower movements, such as slipping off the bed or sofa and onto the floor, cannot be reliably recognized and can necessitate you pressing the call button. One of the important features used in the majority of smart walkers to address gait and balance problems is a fall detection system. To forecast, identify, and prevent instances of falling, a variety of procedures are used to monitor gait metrics using sensory systems.
