DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, algae oil, krill oil, and other sources. DHA is important for the development of the eye and nerve tissues. DHA may help minimize the risk of heart and circulatory illness by thinning the blood, reducing swelling (inflammation), and lowering triglyceride levels in the blood. DHA is important for the maintenance of normal brain function in adults and is necessary for the growth and development of the brain in newborns. Because of the importance of this nutrient, DHA is currently included in most newborn formulae. Our bodies produce DHA in small amounts naturally, but to achieve adequate levels, DHA must be obtained through dietary sources such as cold-water fish, grass-fed meat, dairy, or omega-3 supplemented or pasture-raised eggs. Supplements, such as fish oil, are also available.
