Pachymetry is a quick and painless test that determines the thickness of the cornea. Corneal thickness, as measured by pachymetry, is important in the field of eye care for a number of reasons. Corneal thickness is critical in refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis). It is necessary to understand corneal thickness in order to determine if a person is a candidate for laser vision correction.

Pachymetry is also important in the treatment of glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition in which the eye pressure (intraocular pressure) rises. Elevated eye pressure can result in nerve fiber loss in the retina, which can lead to blindness or reduced vision.

One type of pachymeter is known as optical pachymeters, and are designed to be mounted on a biomicroscope known as a slit lamp, which is used by eye doctors. This device has no direct contact with the cornea. OCT, or optical coherence tomography pachymetry, is a popular type of optical pachymetry.

OCT has also been used to assess other aspects of the CXL procedure such as in vivo riboflavin penetration into the corneal stroma.
