Burns are injuries caused due to overexposure to heat, fire or other radiation and chemical or electrical contact with any body part. Burns can be minor medical problems or life-threatening emergencies depending on the severity of the burn. Burn wounds are extremely painful, frequently highly traumatic, and can lead to permanent scarring, disfigurement or even death. The management of these wounds is based on the injured area. It can cause swelling, blistering, scarring, and in serious cases, may cause death. There are four types of burns: First-degree burns which damage only the outer layer of the skin, Second-degree burns which damage the outer layer and the layer underneath, and Third-degree burns which damage or destroy the deepest layer of skin and tissues underneath. Fourth-degree burns are deep into the skin and are life threatening. Wound care involves treatment using advanced wound management products (foam dressings, pressure relief devices, etc.), surgical wound care products (sutures, staples, etc.) and traditional wound care products (medical tapes, cleansing agents, etc.).
