Wound debridement is the process of removal of necrotic material, devitalized tissue, infected tissue, dried serous tissues, pus, bone fragments or other impurities that delays wound healing. It is not required for all wounds. It is used in chronic wounds that are not healing properly or getting infected and worse. It must be used if there are possibilities of developing problems from wound infection. Some severe & new wounds may also need debridement. It can be done by several methods: Biological debridement uses larval therapy using sterile maggots from species Lucilia sericata, which helps wound healing by eating old tissue. It also releases antibacterial substances and eat harmful bacteria. Enzymatic debridement uses ointment or gel with enzymes obtained from animal, plant or bacteria that soften unhealthy tissue. Autolytic debridement uses enzymes present in body and natural fluids to soften the tissue. Mechanical debridement is done either by use of hydrotherapy, wet to dry dressing or monofilament debridement pads. Surgeries can also be performed to cut the unhealthy tissue. Often multiple methods are also used together.
