In May 2023, Aptera Motors announced that it aims to revolutionize electric vehicles with sleek, solar-powered designs that reduce the need for charging. Their ultra-lightweight Aptera Launch Edition, inspired by the physics of an eggshell, can travel significant distances using solar energy alone. In sunny regions like Southern California, some drivers may never need to plug in their vehicles. Aptera is in the final stages of product development, with production anticipated soon, marking a significant step towards accessible solar mobility.
In May 2021, the U.S. Army announced that it is testing the launch of the Area-I small Agile-Launch Tactically Integrated Unmanned System drone (ALTIUS) from an ultralight tactical vehicle. Previously, the drone was deployed from Army MQ-1C unmanned aircraft, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, and the Air Force XQ-58A Valkyrie stealth unmanned aircraft. However, this marks the first instance of its use in a vehicle-borne capacity by the U.S. military.
