Key Developments

  • In September 2023, the Kentucky Governor kicked off in-person sports betting at Churchill Downs by placing the first bet. He wagered US$ 20 on a parlay for the "over" on wins for the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville football teams and the "under" on Duke University's football team. Once fully operational, sports betting is projected to boost the state's revenue by about US$ 23 million annually. This extra income will be used to oversee sports betting and contribute to the Kentucky permanent pension fund. The state has set an excise tax on sports betting: 9.75% on revenues at licensed facilities and 14.25% on online or smartphone bets. Additionally, 2.5% will go to the Problem Gambling Assistance Fund.
  • In July 2023, International Game Technology PLC announced that its IGT PlaySports technology is now being used for retail sports betting at Palace Casino Resort in Mississippi. Guests at Palace Casino Resort can now visit the Sports and Race Book to place various pre-game and in-play bets using the venue's walk-up betting windows or the self-service kiosks powered by IGT PlaySports. Palace Casino Resort is benefiting from the services and expertise of IGT PlaySports' trading advisory team.
  • In January 2023, Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg began offering sports betting through three new kiosks in partnership with Caesars Sportsbook. These kiosks enable guests to place bets on both pre-game and live sports events. Sports betting was legalized in Kansas-owned casinos last year, with four casinos, including Kansas Crossing Casino & Hotel, contracting with the state to offer sports wagering through independent platforms.
  • In October 2022, Great Canadian Entertainment announced that guests can now place in-person sports bets at ten Ontario destinations. Four of these locations, including Great Blue Heron Casino & Hotel, Elements Casino Brantford, Shorelines Casino Belleville, and Pickering Casino Resort, have introduced reliable sportsbook lounges called Great Canadian Sportsbooks. These lounges offer game-day food and beverage options, live game screenings, and kiosks for placing bets. Team members are available during peak times to assist with inquiries and take bets from customers.
