Increasing number of colorectal cancer cases
Increasing number of colorectal cancer cases worldwide can drive the global ileostomy market growth. Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020, around 1.9 million new cases of colorectal cancer were reported worldwide. This number is expected to rise by 60% to over 3 million new cases by 2030. Permanent ileostomy is often required when part of the colon or rectum is surgically removed to treat colorectal cancer. When a section of the intestine is removed, the remaining portions must be reattached so that bowel movements can continue in a new way. An ileostomy allows bowel movements to pass through an opening in the abdomen called a stoma made during surgery. A pouch is placed over the opening to collect stool. Rising number of colorectal cancer cases leads to more patients requiring ileostomies, thus, boosting demand for ileostomy appliances used in their care. Growing aging population worldwide also contributes to rising prevalence of colorectal cancer and corresponding growth in the ileostomy market. Age is a significant risk factor for colorectal cancer, with over 90% of cases occurring in people over 50 years old. As life expectancy increases globally, more people are surviving to older ages where their risk for colon cancer is highest. According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 65 years and older is projected to increase from 727 million in 2020 to over 1.5 billion in 2050. Many countries now have "aging populations" with over 20% of their people aged 65 and over. This dramatic aging trend will lead to rising need for ileostomy products and services.
