The magnetic field will attract the particles of ilmenite leaving waste materials behind.

Smelting: Smelting is conducted on ilmenite at high temperatures to give titanium metal or titanium dioxide. During the process of smelting, the mixture of ilmenite with a reducing agent, such as charcoal, is heated in a furnace. This method of producing titanium dioxide undergoes further treatment and is applied in paints, coatings, and polymers.

Ilmenite Mining Innovations

Hydrometallurgical Techniques: New hydrometallurgical processes are also being developed as a way of more efficiently leaching titanium out of ilmenite. Aqueous leaching is expected to replace higher energy-intensive techniques such as smelting and could become an alternative process with lower energy requirements and fewer emissions.
