Recent Developments in the Pharmaceutical Packaging Industry

The pharmaceutical packaging market is being revolutionized on an enormous level through a blend of advanced technologies, regulatory reforms, and changing consumer attitudes. Though the sector has to cope with mounting requirements of product safety, integrity, and sustainability, the manufacturers are plowing in their investments for innovation  to deliver these aspects.

In November 2023, Amcor Plc, a global leader renowned for designing and producing environmentally friendly packaging materials, reported a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NOVA Chemicals Corporate, a leading producer of sustainable  polyethylene. Amcor under the deal will purchase mechanically recycled polyethylene resin (rPE) from NOVA Chemicals Corporate to be utilized in the production of flexible packaging films. The initiative enables Amcor's vision to drive packaging circularity by scaling up rPE usage in flexible packaging.

In July 2023, Constantia Flexibles introduced the new pharma pack solution REGULA CIRC with the integration of coldform foil. The pack replaces conventional PVC with a PE sealing layer, thus reducing plastic content and increasing aluminum content. This improvement not only increases the sustainability of the packaging but also enhances material recovery in recycling processes.

In April 2023, Südpack launched its PharmaGuard blister, a blister packaging made of polypropylene. The new product provides an exemplary water vapor barrier and barrier resistance against UV and oxygen.

Besides such product-driven innovations, regulatory bodies around the world have also been raising the standards of regulatory compliance. In anticipation of increasing international challenges for counterfeiting medicines and patient safety, drug packaging has to be aligned with rigorous guidelines on labeling, traceability, and green compliance. The implementation of serialization requirements for packaging of drugs, especially in the U.S. and European markets, has encouraged most manufacturers to include innovative technologies such as RFID and QR codes to provide greater traceability and compliance.

As the pharmaceutical packaging industry expands, so does the call for sustainability. The market, according to Coherent Market Insights (CMI), is forecast to register an 11.8% CAGR, hitting US$ 317.95 billion by 2032. This growth is attributed to several factors, varying from the increase in demand for green packaging, pressure from regulations to reduce plastic waste, to the continued demand for packaging that is secure and safe.

The ongoing focus on eco-friendly processes is compelling many pharmaceutical companies to pursue alternatives to traditional plastic packaging. An example is the introduction of plant-based and recyclable packaging solutions by GreenPack Pharmaceuticals in 2023. The new technologies are helping companies to meet regulatory and environmental requirements, positioning them as industry leaders within a rapidly evolving sector.
