A distributed fiber optic sensor is a sensing system that uses an optical fiber as the sensing medium to detect and monitor numerous physical properties throughout its length. In contrast to typical point sensors, which offer measurements at specific points, distributed fiber optic sensors enable continuous and real-time monitoring over long distances. Fiber optic cables and interrogator units are used in distributed fiber optic sensing systems to detect strain events within the fiber optic. Backscattered light can be used to determine strain events by transmitting a light pulse through the interrogator devices into the fiber optic.
