Major Players - Thermoformed Plastics Industry

Thermoformed plastics have become a popular choice for a wide variety of industries. They’re versatile, durable and offer a cost-effective solution to larger creations that can’t fit into a smaller mold. Thermoformed plastics are also a more flexible option than other manufacturing methods, such as injection molding. This makes them an ideal choice for manufacturers requiring high volumes of the same part or products with limited design changes and short lead times. The thermoforming process uses force to stretch a sheet of heated plastic over a mold and then form it into the desired shape or product (forming). It is a versatile method that can be used on a variety of materials, including acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyethylene terephthalate glycol, (PEV), polypropylene, styrene, and many others. In addition to a range of shapes and sizes, thermoforming also allows for different thicknesses of the resulting product. One of the biggest challenges of plastic thermoforming is minimizing the variation in thickness throughout the finished part. This can be done through a “plug-assisted” system whereby the plug pushes the part into the mold, limiting the area that is subjected to stretching and thus reducing the variance in the thickness of the finished product. This can be especially useful in reducing the amount of air trapped between the product and the packaging or for making resealable plastic bags that have consistent opening and closing properties. Manufacturers who use thermoformed plastics can better align their packaging with consumer demands for convenience. This may include resealable packaging for food or beverages, smaller package sizes, and more durable plastics that can withstand repeated use and impact.
